The city wall walkway in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently revealed its hidden charm, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the heart of the city and experience its rich cultural and historical layers.

Based on the layout of Guiyang's "Nine Gates and Four Pavilions" from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), the walkway spans 7.8 kilometers and is divided into nine sections. It serves as a "living" history, connecting the city's origins with its modern-day development.

In particular, the three sections running through Nanming district cover key areas, including the area from the Old East Gate to the Great South Gate, the area from the Great South Gate to the Secondary South Gate, and the area from the Secondary South Gate to the Great West Gate, stretching for about 2.8 km.

Among the "Nine Gates and Four Pavilions", the Great South Gate holds the most historical significance. Situated next to Jiaxiu Pavilion, it was a vital junction for several main roads, playing a central role in transportation throughout history and into the present day. The Secondary South Gate, located at the western end of Dusi Road, was built in 1382 during the Ming Dynasty. It was an important traffic route connecting the southwestern part of Guiyang. The Great West Gate, now near the intersection of Jiaotong Street and Ruijin Middle Road, was a crucial city gate in Guiyang's old town, roughly located near the Guiyang Art Museum. During the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) , the Great West Gate was not only a key military defense point, but also a key traffic checkpoint on the city's western side.

Starting at Wenchang Pavilion, take a walk along Wenchang South Road towards its intersection with Xihu Road and Nanheng Street, where you'll find the former site of the Great South Gate. Turning left onto Xihu Road, you'll be greeted by Jiaxiu Pavilion, a landmark of Guiyang. Built over 400 years ago during the Ming Wanli era (1573–1620), this historic structure is an icon of the city.

Heading right from the Great South Gate along Nanheng Street, you'll reach Caozhuangyuan Street. Continue west along the Nanming River to discover another must-see area: Qingyun Road Pedestrian Street. This lively area offers not only local delicacies, but also cultural experiences like roadside concerts.

This new year, take a leisurely stroll along the city wall walkway to uncover Guiyang's historic landmarks and experience the city's centuries-old transformation, from its historical rise and fall to its present-day glory.
